Hi gang! I’m linking up with Erica over at Erica Finds today to share some recaps from 2014 and fun things to look forward to in 2015. I loved how she summed up her year and set up some predictions and goals, so I decided to follow suit and share some of my highlights, goals, and trends. Here is my 2014 in review and 2015 fitness trends:

8 New things in 2014

  1. My first sprint triathlon – I was slow, but I finished! I was about to start crying during the race because I was so far behind everyone else in the swim it was discouraging, but I sucked it up and forged ahead. I’m so glad I didn’t give up
  2. PR’s – I pr’d in 2 races this year: my FireCracker 4-mile race and a 2 mile race. My running pace has picked up quite a bit this year in spite of the fact that I haven’t run as much as last year. Short races just might be my thing instead of really long ones…
  3. FAI (femoral acetabular impingement)I found out I basically have deformed hip sockets and bone spurs. I have to modify certain exercises to protect my hip joints, and I need to keep moving so I don’t get sore and stiff. I sound old!
  4. New fitness certification PiYo! I really enjoy teaching this format, it is the perfect combo of strength training and flexibility work. It was actually by doing PiYo that I discovered my hip problems. A mixed blessing
  5. My first time at an international fitness convention (IDEA World and BlogFest) – I loved it! Not sure that I can make it again this coming year, but it was a fun experience and I LOVED meeting my blogger friends!
  6. New blog themes – both of my blogs got some new themes! I am still making little changes to each of them to improve. I’m hoping in 2015 to get some pro designer help
  7. New Facebook page – I bit the bullet this week and merged my 2 blog pages into 1 page. Hopefully that will help me to stay consistently posting good content on that page and I can adapt better to the new Facebook changes coming 1/1
  8. New home – we moved into a new home this year! I have more space now for a home gym and some nice new areas for filming workout videos and cooking videos!

8 Goals for 2015

  1. Get outside more – I get wrapped up in my writing and neglect getting outside as much as I should!
  2. Complete another triathlon and beat last year’s time – That requires that I really improve my swimming, and step up the biking, and get some actual triathlon gear. I was freezing last year during my entire bike ride, so I need to rethink my gear. May in Wyoming is hit and miss (its still usually snowing then) so I need something warm.
  3. Get some more answers for health issues I’m heading to a rheumatologist in January and I’m planning on getting a second opinion on my hips to figure out what’s ahead and how I need to manage things. I hope to avoid surgery if at all possible. I am a big advocate of taking care of your body: you only have one! If you have health problems, get help so you can live your life to the fullest.
  4. Run the Mickelson Trail half-marathon – This has been a goal for a couple years now but injury keeps popping up! I need to gradually work up to it
  5. Strength train consistentlyI WILL NOT neglect my strength training this year! I will be religious about it and make it a habit again, as well as adequate recovery. This will help reduce injuries
  6. Be consistent with all workouts – Try to move my body daily, even if it’s just going for an easy walk
  7. Improve my diet – specifically increasing my protein intake (always a challenge for me) and veggies, and reducing my grains and sugar. I’m reducing grains for my IBS, I seem to do much better when I eat fewer to no grains
  8. Sit less – I have been dedicating more time to writing lately and that means more sitting…boo. I have been fixing that by adding a walking desk to my new treadmill and I want to work on a standing desk too

ACSM’s Top Fitness Trends for 2015

ACSM released their Worldwide Survey Of Fitness Trends for 2015: What’s Driving the Market and listed some continuing trends for 2015 and some of the things that are falling out of favor. Here’s 10 of ACSM’s top trends for 2015:

  1. Body Weight Training
  2. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  3. Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals
  4. Strength Training
  5. Personal Training
  6. Exercise and Weight Loss
  7. Yoga
  8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults
  9. Functional Fitness
  10. Group Personal Training

I know that HIIT and strength training are big – I love those things! The classes at our facility that incorporate those things are always packed. Here are the things that ACSM says are losing popularity:

  1. Zumba
  2. Indoor cycling
  3. Sport-specific training
  4. Physician referrals
  5. Mixed martial arts
  6. Online training
  7. Unmonitored fitness facilities
  8. Medical ball slamming
  9. Bowka

They claim that Zumba’s rapid drop means it’s a fad not a trend. I disagree since it is still doing well and Zumba has been around for 13 years. Sauna belts and Prancercising are fads, not trends (and hilarious to boot)
