What are you plans for the New Year? Do you make resolutions, or do you prefer to set and re-set goals throughout the year? I am not a big resolution person – I prefer to set goals monthly throughout the year. But, I have set 1 big goal for this year: to be my very best this year!
Sure, this goal sounds pretty general and even a bit cliche, but I love the wording of that phrase. For me, this goal encompasses more than just fitness and nutrition. It also includes being a better wife, mom, and friend. It includes caring for my mental, emotional, and spiritual health in addition to my physical health. And it doesn’t mean I will be perfect; far from it!! It means that my goal is to be MY best, no matter what happens around me or what anyone else is doing.
What are some of your goals for the New Year? Whatever your goals are, here are some of my tips for creating (and keeping) goals:
The Best Ways to Set (and Meet!) Your goals:
- Break down big goals into smaller ones
- Pick goals based on what they mean to you – not because everyone else is doing it
- Pick a couple things to focus on each month to prevent being mentally overwhelmed
- Goals should follow SAM (Specific, Achievable, and Measurable)
- Create a vision board
- Punch fear in the face and live each day with purpose!
What is the single most important key to sticking with any of your goals in the long term? Put aside perfectionism! Remember: life isn’t all or nothing. There will be slip-ups and failures, but we must keep moving forward!
So, in the spirit of anti-perfectionism, I started working on my goals yesterday (there is no better time to start than NOW)! Were my efforts perfect? Not even close! I missed the mark several times, but regardless, I am moving forward because my health is very important to me. No one can take care of me the way I can take care of myself!
So, how am I going to meet my goal in 2013? I am breaking my goal of “Being my best” down into smaller monthly goals that are mostly health focused. When I am healthy physically and spiritually, I can be my best self with more energy and zest. Here are the things I am focusing on over the next month:
- 8+ cups water daily
- 5+ servings veggies daily
- 1+ serving leafy greens daily (like spinach, kale, collards, etc)
- Conquer my fears
