This last week I had Tara Stiles as my yoga teacher! Okay, maybe not in real life, just on DVD : ) But Tara Stiles is still a great yoga teacher!
Last week I decided to take a mini stay-cation and took the week off from teaching my high-energy Zumba class so I could get a little R&R. My Tara Stiles: This Is Yoga DVD set came in the mail on Monday and the timing was perfect: I decided to spend my week off doing yoga at home!
I have done a little bit of yoga here and there with other DVD’s, nothing serious, but I wanted to start doing yoga on a regular basis to add another low impact activity to my exerice routine. I can never make it to the class at my gym, so at-home yoga workouts are the way to go for me right now. I am really interested in yoga for the fitness and relaxation aspect (think Yoga for Athletes), not the spiritual implications, so doing yoga at home with my own agenda is perfect.
There are plenty of routines and flows in this DVD series to keep you busy for at least a week without repeating the same routine. There are 10 flows in this DVD set, plus the 90 minute pose library, all ranging in length from 5 minutes to 1 hour. The routines only require a mat (and you!) and are simple enough for anyone to do. Tara shows progressions so you can go at your own pace and progress to more difficult moves as you master the easier ones. I enjoyed Tara’s style of teaching and liked that there wasn’t an emphasis on the spiritual element so people can add it if they like, or just do the routines purely as exercise.
Holy cow was I tight!! My week of yoga was awesome, but still challenging . I learned how much I really needed this deep stretches on a regular basis. I am going to keep doing yoga as a balanced part of my fitness routine to keep my joints healthy and my muscles flexible. I am also going to mix in some of Tara Stile’s YouTube videos to add some new moves. That week off was just what I needed! I jumped back into my regular routine this week with a renewed energy and passion for fitness.
