Struggling with allergies in spring and fall? Here are some tips for surviving seasonal allergies to help you get through allergy season with your sanity (and health) in tact
The seasons are changing here soon from summer into fall, and that usually means fun things like pumpkins and fall holidays, and not so fun things like an seasonal allergies.
For me, pretty much every season is allergy season, even wintertime (thanks, household dust!). But spring and fall prove to be the biggest trouble for my seasonal allergies. Sinus headaches become a regular thing during those times of the year, along with brain fog and plenty of fatigue.
Over the years of dealing with seasonal allergies, I’ve picked up a few tips that can help make dealing with your seasonal allergies a little bit easier!
Tips for Surviving Seasonal Allergies
1) Try some natural supplements
While allergy medications can help a ton, they can often have not-so-great side effects that come along with them, like drowsiness, dry skin, and more. Natural supplements are a good place to start for allergy relief with fewer or no side effects at all.
Some of the vitamins, herbs, and antioxidants you can look for in allergy supplements include:
- Quercetin
- Skullcap
- Nettle
- Bromelain
- Turmeric
- Butterbur
- Vitamin C
- Omega 3’s and fish oil (reduces inflammation all around)
- Vitamin D
- Angelica root
- Grape seed extract
- And more!
You can do some research online to find good herbal supplements for seasonal allergies (always talk to your doctor first, of course!), or you can try a pre-mixed formula like Airloom!
2: Use a HEPA filter in your bedroom
One of the things we did that helped out our seasonal allergies is adding a HEPA filter to our bedroom. Our HEPA filter is meant for 1 room, so several of us in the family have one in our rooms.
HEPA filters help to reduce (and sometimes nearly eliminate) the allergen load in the rooms you spend most of your time in. This is also a great idea if you have pets!
Since the average person spends 8 hours sleeping in their room, bedrooms are a great place for HEPA filters. Adding a small allergy filter to your work space is another idea if you spend your time in one place (like an office) during the day.
Make sure you replace the filters in your HEPA filter regularly in order for it to work it’s best!
3: Change your furnace filters
If you have central air for your home, regularly change your furnace filters and choose ones that have a high allergen filter rating. Some filters recommend changing every 4-6 months, but if you notice a ton of dust on your filters, you may want to change them sooner (changing dirty filters also helps with furnace efficiency, too).
Filters in your central air system can help reduce the dust a ton and ease your allergy symptoms in your home. If you have pets, consider getting a filter that’s rated for pet dander as well.
4: Make time for extra self care
During the worst parts of allergy season, you definitely need to make more time for self care! Taking a few extra steps to ensure you are feeling your best goes a long way to overall health (mentally and physically):
- Stay hydrated (drink water often and carry a water bottle everywhere!)
- Reduce your sugar intake and focus on whole foods
- Make time for extra sleep if your body needs it
- Lower the intensity of your workouts for a while if you’re feeling run down
- Take steps to reduce overall stress in your life and practice deep breathing
5: Remove flowering plants from your home
Years ago, we had a couple of dwarf lemon trees in our home that I loved. For the first few years, they produced some great Myer lemons, but each time they bloomed, our house had pollen floating around. Not great for my allergies!
I loved the idea of my little lemon trees, I eventually had to get rid of them since they were making my seasonal allergies worse.
If you have some favorite flowering plants, you don’t necessarily have to get rid of them like I did, you can find some places outside your home or work to keep them during their flowering times (like a small greenhouse outside or your garage).
