If you have done any summer road trips through western Montana or Idaho, you’ll know that huckleberry milkshakes are a beloved local treat.
You can find all kinds of places selling huckleberry milkshakes, but none that we came across had dairy free huckleberry milkshakes that I could have, so I decided to make my own version with the huckleberries we got from a farmer’s market in Coeur d’Alene this summer.
We used our homemade huckleberry sauce for this recipe, but you can always use a bottled huckleberry sauce instead if you don’t have any homemade sauce!

Why we love this recipe
This recipe is great because you know exactly what’s in it, and you can make this milkshake a bit lower in sugar, too, by using low-sugar dairy-free ice cream.
If you make your own huckleberry sauce for this recipe, it’s easy and simple to make with just a handful of ingredients.
If you don’t have access to fresh huckleberries, you can use a bottled huckleberry sauce or use wild blueberries to make your sauce. The flavor won’t be exactly the same, but you can create a similar sauce since wild blueberries and western/mountain huckleberries are related.

How to make a dairy free huckleberry milkshake
There are 2 ways to make this recipe:
- Make our homemade huckleberry sauce or use a store-bought huckleberry sauce mixed with dairy free vanilla ice cream and dairy free milk.
- OR make a batch of our homemade dairy free huckleberry ice cream and blend some of that with dairy free milk.
For this recipe and the photos, I used our huckleberry sauce recipe and used oatmilk ice cream and oatmilk blended together to create the milkshake. I used oatmilk, but you can use any of your favorite dairy free vanilla ice cream, including low or no-sugar So Delicious ice cream if you want to reduce the sugar in your milkshake.

Once you have your huckleberry sauce made or purchased, the rest is easy: just add your sauce, ice cream, and milk to a blender and blend! I added about 1 Tablespoon of sauce on top and swirled it around the glass as well.
You can make this recipe with regular ice cream if you want as well! This will work with any kind of ice cream you have, not just dairy free ice cream.

As we mentioned in our other huckleberry recipe posts, you’ll notice that our finished recipes are more red than purple-blue in color since natural mountain huckleberries are more deep red than they are purple.
Some commercial huckleberry products have dyes added (like huckleberry taffy, jelly beans, etc.), so they are a different color than what you get from whole huckleberries.
