Dairy Free Oreo Shamrock Shake (Gluten Free)

Disclosure: Our website uses advertising and affiliate links to generate income.

If you have food allergies, you can still indulge in a Shamrock Shake! We made a dairy free and gluten free copycat version of the McDonald’s Oreo Shamrock Shake/McFlurry. This is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day of the year you want an allergy-friendly mint cookies ‘n cream mint milkshake.

If you’re craving a creamy and minty shamrock milkshake but have food allergies, you’re in luck! We recreated the Oreo shamrock shake/McFlurry and made it completely dairy free and gluten free.

This creamy mint and chocolate cookie milkshake is easy to make and you can make this any time of the year, not just around St. Patrick’s Day.

Interestingly enough, the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake wasn’t always mint. The original shamrock shake created in 1967 started as mint-flavored, but over the years it was switched to lemon lime in some regions (which sounds awful to me 😂), then to a green-colored plain vanilla shake, and then back to the original mint flavor.

We are doing a mint version as a nod to the current (and original) iteration, and adding gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies to make it like an allergy friendly Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. Enjoy!

Why we love this recipe

Our version of the Oreo shamrock shake/McFlurry is an allergy friendly dessert that’s also naturally colored. You can easily increase or decrease the mint flavor to your preferences, or leave it out altogether if you’re not a fan of mint.

Not only is this dairy free and gluten free, you can also make this shake anytime of the year, unlike the McDonalds version, which is only available leading up to St. Patrick’s Day.

How to make our dairy free and gluten free Oreo shamrock shake

Our dairy free mint cookies ‘n cream milkshake is really easy to make! Here are the steps to make it, the full recipe card is at the end of the post.

  1. Add the ice cream, dairy free milk (we used oatmilk), mint extract, and natural green (or natural yellow and blue) to a good blender and blend (I use my Ninja TWISTi which works great for frozen recipes). Start out with less dairy free milk at first and add more as needed to facilitate blending and to get the thickness you want.
  2. Crumble up the cookies and stir them into the milkshake (don’t blend them in).
  3. Divide into 2 cups and serve immediately with cookie crumbles on top. You can add some dairy free whipped cream on top as well. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any cans of dairy free whipped cream to add to mine for my photos.

For the mint extract, we used a little bit of the McCormick mint extract, which has a blend of spearmint and peppermint oils, so it has a well-rounded mint flavor without being too strong.

Our milkshake has a light mint flavor, but if you want more mint, I recommend making this as-is and then taste-testing it before adding more extract. A little goes a long way with mint extract, so add small amounts (a few drops at a time) so it doesn’t become overpowering.

If you want a lower sugar version of this recipe, you can swap the dairy free vanilla ice cream for one that is also sugar free, like the So Delicious brand.

What gluten free cookies can I use for this milkshake?

Here are some options for gluten free sandwich cookies you can use in our mint cookie shake. These are all dairy free as well, however, they may be made in facilities with dairy.

Be sure to always check the labels on the brands I share since manufacturer facilities and recipes may change.

If you don’t want to use a sandwich cookie that has cream in the middle, you can also use a crunchy gluten-free chocolate cookie like the Homefree chocolate cookies.
