Create these dairy free hot chocolate spoons for a sweet and creamy cup of hot cocoa any time, or to give as gifts! These hot cocoa spoons are gluten free, easy to make, and a fun winter project for kids.

When the cold weather hits, nothing is quite a nice as a steaming cup of hot chocolate! We created some allergy friendly hot chocolate spoons which are a fun way to make hot chocolate (and they’re portable, too).
Our chocolate spoons pre-portion the perfect amount of chocolate for making a creamy and delicious 8 ounce cup of hot cocoa. Just add one to hot dairy free milk and you’ll have a perfect hot cocoa in a few minutes.
The great thing about these hot cocoa spoons is that they are easier to make than hot chocolate bombs! Hot chocolate bombs take more time to make, and use special molds. These hot cocoa spoons are faster to make, just use ice cube molds, are nearly foolproof, and still make great gifts.
If using the Enjoy Life chocolate for this recipe (like we did), this recipe is:
- Dairy free
- Gluten free
- Peanut and tree nut free
- Vegan
- Soy Free

How to make dairy free hot chocolate spoons
Here are the steps for making the hot chocolate spoons. The full recipe card with the ingredients is at the end of the post, this is just an overview of the steps.
Making the hot chocolate spoons:
- Melt the dairy free chocolate until the chocolate is melted and smooth (you can use a double boiler or the microwave).
- Pour the melted chocolate into the silicone ice cube tray, filling each well almost completely full (you’ll need to leave a little space for displacement of the chocolate when you add the spoons).
- Add the wooden spoons to the chocolate. They should stand up in the chocolate.
- Allow the chocolate to set up at room temperature or chill until set (chilling in the fridge is faster).
- Once the chocolate is set up, melt the dairy free white chocolate and crush the peppermint candies and place the candy in a bowl.
- Dip the bottom of each chocolate cube into the white chocolate then right away into the crushed peppermint.
- Set on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and allow to set up again at room temperature or in the fridge.
- Once the chocolate is set, store in an airtight container or bag. Or wrap these in mini bags and gift them!
Once your hot chocolate spoons are made, here’s how to make a cup of dairy free hot chocolate with them:
- To make the hot chocolate, add a hot chocolate spoon to 6-8 ounces of hot dairy free milk. You can use any dairy free milk you like, but we like using oat milk. Make sure it’s certified gluten free if needed.
- The chocolate will melt into the hot milk. Stir as it melts.
- Once it’s completely melted, use an handheld frother to mix the chocolate into the milk until it’s smooth.
Don’t skip the step with the frother if you want a smooth and creamy hot chocolate!

How to make these hot cocoa spoons sugar free (or low sugar)
If you want to make these sugar free, you can use a dairy free brand of sugar free chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chocolate and the white chocolate.
The Bake Believe sugar free semi-sweet chocolate chips are made without dairy (their other flavors have some dairy), but so far I’ve had no luck finding a dairy free and sugar free white chocolate on the market.
If you want to find some sugar free peppermint candies, the Dr. John’s brand is made with natural ingredients and are made in a nut-free facility (we haven’t tried out this brand).

Flavor variations for our cocoa spoons
There are a few fun variations you can make of our hot cocoa spoons!
The peppermint crushed candies add a nice little bit of peppermint to this hot chocolate. It’s not strong or overpowering, but you can leave them out of the recipe if you like as well. These will still taste great without them if you don’t like peppermint!
If you want to have a caramel or toffee flavor in your hot chocolate rather than peppermint, you can swap the crushed peppermints with come crushed dairy free hard toffee candies from Chimes.
They are very similar to Werther’s hard candies and are so yummy! We used these in our recipe for coffee toffee chocolate bark and would taste awesome in this recipe, too.
