Cozy up this winter with our delicious SunButter Hot Chocolate! It’s easy to make and can be made as a single serving or as a larger batch on the stovetop. Our SunButter Hot Chocolate is naturally sweetened, grain free, vegan, and can easily be made paleo and keto/low carb as well.
Hey friends! Winter is still in full swing and even though the weather has been pretty nice lately, I’ve been dying for spring and warmer weather. We just got snow last night and had slick roads this morning, so my craving for warm weather is even more fresh in my mind!
We love warming up with a cup of hot chocolate on cold days when we have a little time to mix one up. I’ve been seeing a of peanut butter hot chocolate recipes around the internet lately and I really wanted to create a peanut-free version for my kids.
My son has a peanut allergy, so we make a lot of recipes with SunButter instead of peanut butter in our house. Plus my daughter is allergic to tree nuts and can’t have other nut butters, like almond butter or cashew butter.
So SunButter is our go-to nut butter-alternative spread in our house, and it works great in recipes like our SunButter Hot Chocolate. Since we use it so much, we have quite a few SunButter recipes on our blog that you can choose from if you have a peanut allergy as well!
Our SunButter hot cocoa recipe seems decadent but it is naturally sweetened and can be made paleo and keto as well! Plus it’s already grain free, vegan, and soy free, too. It’s perfect for multiple allergies or special diets!
How to make our SunButter hot chocolate recipe
Our single serving SunButter hot chocolate is super easy to make and doesn’t require the stovetop unless you want to make this into a bigger batch!
Here are the steps to make a single serve SunButter hot cocoa:
- Add all the ingredients into a small blender (we use a NutriBullet)
- Process until smooth
- Pour into a microwaveable mug and heat in the microwave for 1 to 1-1/2 minutes (depending on how hot you’d like it)
- Serve immediately with dairy free whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce if you like
If you love adding whipped cream to your hot chocolate, So Delicious makes an awesome whipped cream that we love called CocoWhip. ReddiWhip also makes a coconut or almond based whipped cream as well (we haven’t tried the almond one yet).
Want to make a powdered hot chocolate drink mix you can take places (like school or camp)? We have a great recipe for dairy free hot cocoa mix that I’ve made for my kids when they went to nature camp for school.
Making our hot chocolate sugar free, keto, or paleo
You can easily make this SunButter hot cocoa keto/low carb or paleo with a few simple recipe swaps:
- Use no sugar added SunButter instead of creamy SunButter
- Use Swerve or Stevia instead of maple syrup for low carb
- Keep the pure maple syrup if you’re not low carb but doing paleo
- Use sugar free dairy free whipped cream (Silk heavy whipping cream)
Regular creamy SunButter has a little bit of sugar in it (1.5 grams per Tablespoon) so make sure to use the no sugar added SunButter if you’re avoiding all added sugars.
If you’re looking for a dairy free whipped cream that is also low carb? Silk just released a dairy free heavy cream that will make whipped cream and it’s completely sugar free!
As you make your whipped cream with the Silk heavy cream, if you want some sweetness you can add a little powdered sugar and vanilla, or use Stevia powder or Swerve powder and vanilla to make it a little sweet without sugar (skip the Swerve if you have IBS though since it’s a sugar alcohol).
How to make a bigger batch of SunButter hot cocoa
I wrote this recipe as an easy single serving hot chocolate, but if you’d like to make a bigger batch of SunButter hot chocolate to serve to more people, you can triple or quadruple this recipe easily and cook it on the stove.
Here are the steps for making 4 servings on the stovetop:
- Combine 2 cups of coconut milk, 1/2 cup coconut cream, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, and 1/4 cup SunButter in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Add to a saucepan and whisk in the other 2 cups of coconut milk, 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and Stevia drops if using.
- Heat gently over medium/low heat until it begins to simmer, stirring regularly.
- Serve with dairy free whipped cream and chocolate drizzle if you like!
Our recipe cards also have a handy slider on it that helps to adjust serving sizes and ingredient amounts. Just hover over the serving size amount number in the recipe card and slide it up to adjust the recipe card ingredients for your number of servings.
