When the weather gets hot, it’s time to switch up your normal coffee routine!
We typically love our homemade cold brew coffee (it’s really easy to make), but it’s also fun to mix it up a little bit with a healthier homemade Mocha Frappe made with Earth Echo Foods Cacao Bliss powder!
Our version of a classic mocha frappe is made with less sugar than the regular coffee shop version and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant superfoods from the Cacao Bliss. You can even drink this every day if you want!
This healthy mocha frappe is:
- Dairy free
- Gluten free
- Soy free
- Peanut free
- Low in sugar
How to make a healthy mocha frappe
To make our healthy mocha frappe, you’ll need a high-powered blender that can crush ice. I used my NutriBullet mini blender that works great for crushing ice (I use this for pretty much everything that will fit in it!).
- Place all ingredients in a small high-powered blender and blend until ice is crushed.
- You’ll probably need to turn off the blender and stir it once or twice to help mix things well.
- Pour into a glass and top with dairy free whipped topping and chocolate drizzle!
If you don’t have a blender that can crush ice, you can just make this an iced mocha latte instead by mixing your ingredients (except the ice) together with a Blender Bottle or a frother, then shake with the ice.
One thing you can do with this recipe as well is replacing the cold brew coffee and some of the ice cubes with cold brew coffee into ice cubes for maximum flavor that won’t be diluted by melting ice!
Ice cube trays hold about 1 Tablespoon of liquid in each cube (this will probably vary by ice cube tray type), so you’d use about 6 cubes of frozen coffee to replace the cold brew. Blend it up, then add some more regular ice cubes if you want even more slushy texture.
If you enjoy having blended iced coffee drinks regularly, keep a few trays of cold brew coffee ice cubes in your freezer to have on hand for your homemade mocha frappes!
What if I don’t have cold brewed coffee?
For our recipe we used cold brewed coffee for the best coffee taste and smoothness. But if you don’t have cold brewed coffee, you can use a strong hot brewed coffee that has been chilled.
If you have the option to make cold brewed coffee, definitely try it! It’s easy to make at home (we have a big batch recipe for cold brew coffee) and it’s lower in acid and sweeter tasting than hot brewed coffee without having to add sweetener.
What kind of dairy free milk should I use?
I used creamy oat milk in this recipe, but you can use any dairy free milk that you prefer!
If you want to make this frappe paleo, use a paleo dairy free milk such as nut milks (almond, cashew, etc.) or coconut milk.
We used unsweetened or no-sugar-added oat milk, but if you’re not concerned about added sugars, you can use regular oat milk (or other dairy free milk) for a sweeter frappe.
Earth Echo Foods Cacao Bliss
We used Cacao Bliss powder from Earth Echo Foods to make this healthy mocha frappe, and it’s packed with antioxidant rich foods. Cacao Bliss is a superfood powder mix that you can use for making drinks, protein bites, baked treats, or any recipe where you’d use cocoa powder.
Cacao Bliss is also gluten free, non-dairy, USDA organic, soy free, and non GMO!
Let’s break down the science-supported benefits of the ingredients in Cacao Bliss:
- Organic raw cacao powder and organic cocoa powder: raw cacao and heat processed cocoa are both high in flavonoids and antioxidants that reduce inflammation (source).
- Organic MCT oil powder: MCT oil appears to help reduce appetite and food intake by increasing satiety (source).
- Organic turmeric root powder: Turmeric contains the active polyphenol curcumin which acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (source).
- Organic lucuma fruit powder: lucuma powder is made from the fruit of the South American Pouteria lucuma tree. Lucuma has a sweet flavor and contains antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, and fiber (source).
- Organic mesquite pod powder: mesquite powder is from the pods of the mesquite tree (there are over 90 varieties!). Native Americans in the Southwest used to use mesquite powder as a flour for various foods. Mesquite powder is high in protein, low glycemic, and high in iron and zinc (among many other minerals and antioxidants, source).
- Organic black pepper fruit powder: black pepper extract is considered a type of antioxidant that also helps with bioavailability and absorption of other nutrients, such as turmeric (source).
This also contains Himalayan sea salt (which contains trace minerals), organic cinnamon, organic coconut nectar powder, and organic monk fruit as well!
