This delicious tropical soursop margarita tastes amazing and is perfect for relaxing after a hot day. Soursop juice is easy to buy online or locally in many areas, so even if you don’t have access to fresh soursop, you can still enjoy this amazing margarita. This recipe tastes great with a tequila alternative as well for a zero proof cocktail!
I’m gearing up for warm weather recipes, and since discovering soursop juice at one of our local stores, I’ve been making all kinds of recipes with it, including this incredible soursop margarita (aka guanabana margarita).
If you’re not sure what soursop is, you can check out our soursop lemonade post, we added some great info on what kind of fruit it is and where you can find it. To me, it tastes like a tropical gummy bear and has a great balance of sweet and tart (mostly on the sweet side), so it works so well in drinks like lemonade and margaritas.
My husband and I prefer a sweeter margarita and don’t like too much lime juice, so this one is a bit more sweet. But you can easily adjust the amount of lime in this if you’d like more tartness to it.
This recipe is for 1 drink, but if you need a pitcher, you can adjust the servings in the slider. Or you can make a big pitcher of our soursop lemonade and add some tequila to it. We tried recently at a family gathering it is so good, everyone loved it! Obviously it’s not the same as a margarita because it’s made with lemons and not limes, but it still tastes pretty amazing. It was a huge hit with our margarita-loving family members.

How to make a soursop margarita
If you’re not able to get fresh soursop near you, don’t worry: we used soursop juice in this recipe, which is easy to order online, so you don’t have to worry about sourcing fresh fruit for this drink!
Here’s how we made ours (the full recipe card is at the bottom of the post):
- Use a lime slice to wet the rim of your favorite margarita glass, and add salt or sugar to the rim. I like Hawaiian red salt on mine (I used the Salt Sisters brand, it’s not overly salty) and my husband likes coarse turbinado sugar on his.
- Add some ice to your glass.
- To a cocktail shaker or jar with a lid, add some ice and 2 ½ ounces of 100% soursop juice (we used Nilo brand), 1 ½ to 2 ounces good quality tequila OR tequila alternative, ½ ounce fresh lime juice, and ½ ounce triple sec.
- Taste test and adjust the amount of lime juice if you want additional lime juice.
- Shake the ingredients together and pour into your prepared glass over ice and enjoy!
If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, no problem! We’ve used a glass canning jar with a tight fitting lid to shake our drinks with ice and then strain out the ice when we pour it into our glass.
How to make this margarita zero proof/alcohol free
To make this alcohol free, you can use a great tequila alternative for this recipe. I made this recipe with both Patron blanco/silver tequila and the Ritual Zero Proof tequila alternative and they both tasted great.
I personally love the taste of a real, good quality tequila in margaritas, but if you’re avoiding alcohol or can’t have it for various reasons, the Ritual version is a good option. I used the same amount of tequila alternative as regular tequila in the recipe and it worked well.
I’ve tried the Monday mezcal alternative and I felt like it had too much of a green pepper flavor, so I haven’t used it much in margaritas. I’ve only tried the Ritual Zero Proof tequila alternative and the Monday mezcal alternative, and out of the 2, I prefer the Ritual one.
There are a few other brands that make tequila alternatives, like Lyre’s. I bought 3 bottles of Lyre’s flavors and found them to smell really good but they lacked enough flavor for mixed drinks. When I mixed the pink gin into a mocktail/cocktail, I couldn’t taste much at all of it, which was very disappointing since I was so excited to try it.
So I don’t have high hopes for the flavor of the Lyre’s tequila alternative even though I haven’t tried that particular flavor. On the Boisson website, the Ritual tequila seemed to have the best and most consistent good ratings out of several of the other brands. They also have pretty good ratings on Amazon.
If you have tried other brands, let me know how they taste in the comments! I’m always trying new alcohol free spirits since I can’t have much alcohol. We have a list of a bunch of different alcohol free spirits and cocktails as well.
I loved the way the red salt looked on the white plate after I had added it to the rim of the glass, it looks really pretty on the plate!
