The Fit Life: News & New Things #10 #cleaneating #health #fitfoodie #fitfluential

Hey friends! Here’s the 10th (yes 10th!) installment of my news and new things post. This one is mostly food and foodie things I am trying lately, and it’s actually quite overdo. I have so many new things I’m trying lately that sometimes it’s hard to keep up! I post a lot of the new things I’m trying over on Instagram so there is always something new on there. I usually post at least daily!

Veggies! I got a load of veggies from my parent’s garden and some peaches from the farmer’s market. Lots to love!

Enjoy Life Foods sent me these allergy-friendly baking mixes for free recently and some baking goodies to go with them! I have made the pizza crust, pancakes, and brownies so far and they are pretty good. The texture of the brownies is spot on! I can’t eat too much of them because of the brown rice protein added to the mix, but if you can have brown rice and brown rice protein, these mixes have a protein and probiotic boost in them.

These mixes work great in a pinch or if you aren’t entirely comfortable with allergy-friendly or gluten free cooking. But I still love my personal recipes for brownies and pancakes the best 😉 I made a few adjustments to the mix instructions on the back of the boxes to get the batter to work out better (I needed to use more or less water for the mix), so you may need to make adjustments to your mixes as needed for the best texture.

I got glasses! My eyes aren’t horrible but they have gotten a bit worse so I need these for driving. Still getting used to these 🙂

Nektar Naturals sent me a little gift pack of their granulated honey to try out, and I had a little Instagram giveaway for a pourable bottle of Nektar Naturals. The giveaway is over now, but I host giveaways periodically on Instagram so follow me over there and don’t miss the next one! You can get the boxes of Nektar packets and bottles of Nektar crystals at many Walmart stores (including ours).

We bought some Epic bars at a Natural Grocers store to try and we were actually pretty disappointed. The texture and flavors weren’t what we were hoping for. I really like Simply Snackin’, Tanka, and the Omni bars meat snacks, but the flavors and textures in these Epic bars were a swing and a miss sadly. I was really hoping these would taste better!

These were yummy! I love Emmy’s macaroons: they are yummy, healthy, and allergy-friendly too. This was a delicious flavor! Just a hint of chocolate for my palate since I have been avoiding it lately. I do have to watch my fat intake though: most of the snacks that I can eat tend to be high-fat and I have been struggling to get enough protein lately, so I need to really watch my intake of those high fat treats (even though they’re healthy) so I can get my macronutrients where they need to be.

Ashwagandha chai tea from Rebbl – yummy! I have been trying hard to reduce my coffee consumption since it seems to be bothering my interstitial cystitis, which is sad for me (I love coffee!),  so I have been looking for drink alternatives for coffee. Maybe I will be able to drink coffee on occasion again after a while. I’ll write a post sometime on interstitial cystitis and how I have been dealing with it.

Since I am missing my morning coffee, I have been drinking turmeric milk periodically throughout the week. Not sure it will give me energy but it should help with inflammation anyway and it tastes good.
Here’s the recipe for Turmeric Milk (adapted from a recipe from Move Nourish Believe):

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Dash cinnamon and allspice
  • Several drops liquid vanilla Stevia
  • Heat it up to you liking and enjoy!

Here’s a hydration hack you can try! I have been doing this for a few days and it’s working pretty well so far. I have a hard time getting enough water sometimes, so it’s super important for me to track my intake and make sure I’m drinking enough water. I decided to put 4 rubber bands on my bottle, 1 for each bottle I should be drinking. Once I drink a full bottle, I remove a band. If I drink 4 bottles that’s 10 cups (2-1/2 cups per bottle). Voila: water tracking without writing anything down. It’s been working so far!

I read this in a magazine and thought it was so inspiring, I had to share it! running marathons at age 92, how awesome is that! And she started running at age 76, proving that it’s never too late to get started on your fitness journey

Tomatoes from our tiny garden! We didn’t really have a veggie garden this year, just some tomato plants from my mom that we planted. They are small but starting to produce some nice little tomatoes. Next year we want to start a bigger container garden.

More treats from Missy J’s! I found these the last time I was in Fort Collins at the Whole Foods Market and loved these carob treats! I really love chocolate but it doesn’t love me back anymore, so I was excited to find these. This time I bought a couple other flavors to try, and both were delicious! I think I will have to buy some of these online to keep with me so I won’t be caving in to chocolate cravings again

Some of the other snacks we have been trying out: the Yummari bites are pretty good, they are made in Colorado and are allergy-friendly! The paleo Cinnamon Raisin Cookies were yummy too, they are made with almond flour so they aren’t good for my kids but I could eat them.

Zach and I love the Brad’s Raw Broccoli Poppers! Super amazing and delicious, just the right amount of savory spice in this flavor. And lastly, the Radical Raspberry Lemon bar from Bearded Brothers was terrific! I liked it better than the paleo cookies. Raspberry is one of my favorite fruits so this bar hit the spot!

We tried some of the mac and cheese from SO Delicious. It was okay, but just okay. My kids actually didn’t like the pizza flavor in this version. We definitely prefer the Daiya mac and cheese much better. We were pretty happy when one of our local stores started carrying the Daiya mac and cheese!

I have also seen that Annie’s is making a vegan and gluten-free boxed mac and cheese as well! I haven’t tried it yet, but if you don’t have access to any of these boxed versions you can always try out my dairy-free and gluten-free mac and cheese recipe.
